INK & IVORY HOUSE

“Ink & Ivory” House, a residential design that thoughtfully responds to its unique site context and the dynamic rhythm of its surrounding neighborhood. Situated on a 105 x 50 ft north-facing plot within a gated villa community in Bangalore, the site opens onto a secondary road framed by mature, 10-year-old mango trees. These trees lend a natural veil of privacy, enhancing the site’s serene ambiance.

The neighborhood is a vibrant tapestry of activity, with morning walkers, office commuters, and villa maintenance staff animating the streets throughout the day. However, the absence of a compound wall posed a challenge, as north-facing windows risked compromising the residents’ privacy. Our design approach addressed this by prioritizing spatial sensitivity and strategic planning to balance openness with seclusion.

The heart of the project lies in its courtyard-centric design, where common spaces gracefully open into a central courtyard, fostering light, air, and connection. We carefully layered the spatial progression from public to private zones as one moves deeper into the site, ensuring a seamless transition that enhances both functionality and intimacy. This thoughtful arrangement not only mitigates the impact of the bustling surroundings but also creates a sanctuary that feels both open and secure.

Ink & Ivory House reflects The Design Workshop’s commitment to crafting spaces that are responsive to their environment and the needs of their inhabitants. We are proud to present this project , showcasing how intentional design can transform a site’s challenges into opportunities for beauty, privacy, and harmony.
